Today marks 12 weeks since Willa joined us. It's been a fantastic 12 weeks - she's an absolute delight and I find her to be very very delicious. She's a great deal more interactive and communicative these days - she smiles and pouts, and waves her long legs and arms around to punctuate whatever point it is she's trying to make. I surprise myself by enjoying dressing her in all manner of outfits as though I were dressing a doll, and she only seems to mind when this involves her arms and sleeves.
Today I returned to paid employment and left my darling Willa with her doting dad. Paid employment was chaos - there was no easing back into it, but rather a desk of urgent work. Leaving Willa for the day brings with it the joys of expressing breastmilk in the workplace. I'm no stranger to expressing - I've been doing it every morning for weeks and weeks now. But expressing in the workplace is a whole other thing. I'm fortunate in that my workplace has a separate room set aside for this kind of thing - however it's a stark, boring room and has clearly not ever been used as a room for regular expressing. (There will be changes made to this room!). My first attempt at expressing was lacklustre - I was a tad stressed by the urgent work and struggled to get my boobs to give up their liquid gold. So I rang home, and could hear Willa having a gentle wah in the background, which was all my boobs needed. It may be that adrenaline/cortisol overrides the boob, but wailing of baby overrides the adrenaline/cortisol. Afternoon attempts at expressing went much better - the urgent work not so much.
And I don't think I have ever been so pleased to get home - and even more so to be greeted by a happy Willa enjoying naked-bottom time, and a happy stay at home dad. Day 1: done!
